Jonathan Sussman - President and Founder

Big City Tutoring - Jonathan Sussman  - President and Founder

Jonathan graduated Cum Laude in 2003 from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with a BA in Economics and minor in Music. Jonathan founded Big City Tutoring in the summer of 2007 and is responsible for all the inner workings of the company. He currently volunteers tutoring services for under privileged high school students to achieve higher scores on their SATs and is an active mentor in various New York City public school programs. Having extensive experience working with a diverse group of students, Jonathan's background enables him to recruit tutors who share his passion for education. Jonathan is also an accomplished pianist and has been playing in bands for 15 years. 

Naomi Tam

Big City Tutoring - Naomi TamNaomi Tam is a current Masters student at Teachers College at Columbia University, having recently graduated cum laude from Binghamton University with a B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology. She has extensive experience tutoring and working with a variety of age groups, from elementary school to undergraduate college students. Naomi is characterized by her patience, dedication, and her desire to work with students to ensure comprehensive understanding and appreciation of core concepts and skills. She believes that having knowledgeable, excellent and dedicated teachers greatly benefits society as a whole, and strives to become an effective educator in the future. Professionally, Naomi tutors high school math and science, as well as English as a second language of all levels. After obtaining her Masters degree in Secondary Science Education, Naomi plans to teach Biology in the New York City public school system, working on cultivating the intellectual growth of the next generation by empowering students with the tools they need to become problem solvers, self-learners and self-thinkers.

Kate Gastonguay

Big City Tutoring - Kate GastonguayKate graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Sociology. For the past 4 years, she has tutored Algebra I & II, Geometry, Biology, Spanish I & II, and English (spelling, grammar, reading and writing development). She has extensive training in executive functioning, which enables her to help students build skills in organization, time management, and self-advocacy. Kate has worked with students ranging in age from 5th grade through college. In addition, she has had the privilege of working with students in highly-competitive private schools, as well as with students who face learning and behavioral challenges.

Kaitlin Bell

Big City Tutoring - Kaitlin BellKaitlin graduated Magna Cum Laude from Dartmouth College in 2005 with a B.A. in history. After college, she worked as a daily newspaper reporter in Texas and then went on to receive her M.S. from Columbia Journalism School. Since graduating from Columbia, she has worked as a freelance journalist, writing about culture, food and books for national and regional publications. She has tutored students in French, English and history. Her specialty is writing, including helping students with college and graduate school admissions essays.

Shoshanah Pearlman

Shoshannah earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry/microbiology from Swarthmore College and a Master’s degree in chemistry from Yale University. After teaching high school science in New Jersey, she came to New York City in 2004 to tutor both math and science. She enjoys working with a range of learning styles, particularly gifted students of all ages with learning disabilities and ADHD. Shoshannah currently attends the Columbia University School of Nursing and plans to specialize as a  Nurse Practitioner in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Jill Schimmel

Big City Tutoring - Jill SchimmelJill graduated from the University of Virginia, with a BA in Government and a Minor in Philosophy. During her third year, she studied at Universidad de Sevilla, in southern Spain. After graduation, Jill moved to Osaka, Japan through the JET Program (Japan Exchange and Teaching). She taught English at a public high school and acted as a language and culture consultant at her local city hall. After three years in Japan, Jill returned to New York, where worked at a translation company as a Project Manager and Proofreader. Jill then went on to receive her Masters in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at Fordham University. Jill is New York State-certified in ESL, and after three years of teaching ESL in Washington Heights, Jill now teaches ESL and has started a Japanese Language Program at a public middle school in the Bronx. Jill is experienced in tutoring English Language Arts, Social Studies, Spanish, and Japanese; she is also experienced in preparing students for the ISEE and SHSAT.

Anna Jones

Big City Tutoring - Anna JonesAnna graduated cum laude from UNC Chapel Hill with majors in economics and psychology. She is currently completing her master’s degree in education at Relay Graduate School of Education with a specialization in mathematics. She is a 7th grade math teacher with the NYC Department of Education at MS 337 School for Inquiry and Social Justice. She has tutored for the past 10 years in subjects ranging from English to science to math. She also tutors high school students for the SAT through NY Cares.

Nicole McCabe

Big City Tutoring - Nicole McCabeNicole graduated from Manhattan College with a B.A. in Secondary Education with a concentration in Social Studies. Nicole holds a New York State teaching certificate in Social Studies grades 6-12. Nicole has taught elementary school, middle school and currently teaches at the high school level. Nicole is perusing a master’s degree in Literacy at Fordham University. Nicole was selected by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to attend Stanford University and participate in an intensive seminar entitled “The Gilded Age and Its Modern Parallels.

Brigitte Choura

Big City Tutoring - Brigitte ChouraBrigitte graduated from Muhlenberg College with a BA in English and Theatre. In her semester abroad, she studied Literature, Education, and Ethics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. For the past eight years, she has worked with children of all ages, teaching Shakespeare, creative writing, vocal expression, creative movement, conflict resolution, and creative drama. Currently, she works as an Assistant Teacher at the New Amsterdam Early Childhood Center, a Waldorf school located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Her passion for the arts and for language guides her as a tutor. Her work in Waldorf education continues to deepen her understanding of child development.

Peter Sparchino

Originally from the West Coast, Peter graduated from Indiana University in 2006 with a degree in music. He has worked with many high-quality organizations as a tutor specializing in test prep, with consistently high results, for the past three years. In addition, he has helped students with writing, high school math, and study skills. Peter is also a professional musician, performing regularly throughout the greater New York area as well as the east and west coasts.

Caitlin Huss

Caitlin earned a bachelor of arts in English with an emphasis in creative writing from Kenyon College and a master of science in teaching from Fordham University. She taught high school English as a New York City Teaching Fellow and holds a New York State teaching certificate. Caitlin has tutored elementary, middle, and high school students in a variety of subjects, prepared students for the SAT, SHSAT, ISEE, ELA and AP English exams, and facilitated the college admissions process for students and their families.
